Your hole serves no purpose – you aren’t burying a time capsule or planting trees; rather, you are simply digging.
Your efforts may require sweat and tears – it can be exhausting, yet rewarding work! But it does feel productive!
But you are wasting your efforts.
At PN, “shoveling to nowhere” has come to symbolize behavior that may be uncomfortable or unpleasant but doesn’t actually contribute toward reaching health and fitness goals.
All of us have their own definition of shoveling to nowhere: perhaps:
Repeatedly pushing yourself in the gym until you’re exhausted-and injured. Crash dieting only to gain all your weight back soon afterwards. Stress eating until you feel overstuffed… and still feel worse after! These scenarios all contribute to chronic overeating.
Avoiding exercise due to an unwillingness to join a gym… even though your joints feel creaky and stiff. Refusing to try medication for chronic anxiety as you take pride in remaining prescription-free.
Avoiding difficult conversations or asserting your needs because it is easier to maintain peace. Strive to be the sole provider without asking for assistance to show that you can manage everything by yourself.
You, or your client, might be working hard and persisting; yet you aren’t growing as an individual or a team.
Are you feeling uncomfortable? We call this kind of discomfort “difficult-easy.” Sure, it might be difficult-easy (a strange term indeed! But perhaps not quite as catchy as “working vacation” and “airline food.”)
But understanding what constitutes difficult-easy can help you identify “difficult-difficult,” and THAT is one of the best-kept health and fitness secrets to jumpstart progress and create lasting change.
We will show you how, including a 14-day challenge.
