About one year ago, an established yoga instructor caused a minor uproar when Gatorade ran advertisements featuring Jessamyn Stanley–an instructor, author, and body positivity advocate–in one of its ads.

People were incensed at this choice of an “athlete,” much less someone considered healthy. Social media users took to arguing against such candidates being seen as an athlete or healthy individual.

At the other end of the debate were those who felt Stanley’s body size had no correlation to her overall health, suggesting we do away with medical categories like “overweight” and “obesity,” which they claimed supported anti-fat bias and stigma.
